So, the whole situation with my son was not as bad as I thought. He did, in fact, make a gesture with his corndog because he was trying to be funny and no, that wasn't the right thing to do, but it's not the worst thing he could do in life. He is being punished for making a bad choice. The thing I was worried about was him buying lunches on credit without my permission. Apparently that wasn't the case. He had to buy a lunch because they refused to heat up the lunch we sent him with. Isn't that a bunch of bullshit? My husband sent him with leftovers thinking that they could just pop the dish in the microwave and heat it up for him. They wouldn't do it so either he charged a lunch or didn't eat. I feel better about that now - the fact that he didn't charge it just because he didn't want his lunch, not that they wouldn't heat up his damn food.
I'm really not impressed with this new school. They don't act like they care much about the children and I'm not just referring to the lunch issue. I'm talking about the fact that the teacher advised us she would write us a quick note each week to let us know how he's doing (because he has ADHD and we're trying to get his medication right) and she doesn't do it. We've asked her to give us some sort of progress throughout next week because we just increased his dose today and we need to know if it's working or not by the end of next week. If she doesn't come through this time, I'm contacting the principal. If that doesn't work, I'm calling the school board. Another thing I'm pissed about is that he has ADHD and we are supposed to be able to get a 2nd set of books to keep at home to help him with his school work (because kids with ADHD don't always remember to bring the books home) and you know what they told us? We'll look into getting you an extra set. Then.. a month and several inquiries later: sorry, we don't have any extra books. Well, tough shit... it's a law that you have to provide them in this situation. Looks like I'll be contacting the school board anyway.

Schools can be a real pain in the tuckus if it turns out your child needs a little "extra" anything. My entire family breathed a collective sigh of relief once my brother graduated high school. We both went to private school, and they did squat for him. My parents must have spent thousands above and beyond tuition to pay for tutors for him. They act as if you're asking them to do something special, and all you want them to do is their JOB.
